August Macke
August Macke’s primary aim was to show life with its mysteries, secrets and beauty. His favorite subjects are people – outside shop windows, in parks, in the street or in cafes. In Macke’s pictures, there are no everyday tensions and social reality, for emphasis is on leisure and zest for life. Macke was born in 1887 and trained at the Düsseldorf Academy and with Lovis Corinth in Berlin. His first contracts as a painter were the sets and costumes for theatre play. In 1911, he joined the “Blaue Reiter”(“The Blue Rider”), an influential group of Expressionist artists. He was killed in the war in 1914.
